It significantly reduces the quality of life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When my young patients come to the outpatient clinic, they usually ask: &#8220;Doctor, if I use antibiotics or apply an ointment to that area, will this hole close?&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Before answering this, one must understand the logic of the disease. Pilonidal sinus is a &#8220;tunnel and nest&#8221; disease formed by hairs accumulated under the skin. So, can this mechanical problem be solved with chemical methods (medication)?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Does Pilonidal Sinus Go Away on Its Own?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>My patients wonder if pilonidal sinus can heal by itself. They want it to disappear without surgery or a procedure. However, the medical reality is this: Pilonidal sinus is not a disease that heals on its own or vanishes with medication.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Your body perceives the hair that has entered under the skin as a &#8220;foreign body&#8221; and surrounds it with a capsule (cyst). From time to time, this area becomes infected, swells, and forms an abscess.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"\" data-col=\"2\"><ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>What do antibiotics do?<\/strong> They dry up the infection and reduce the swelling.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>What do creams\/ointments do?<\/strong> They soften the skin and perhaps reduce the discharge.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>What about the hairs?<\/strong> The hairs and the tunnel structure (sinus) remain exactly where they are.<\/li>\n<\/ul><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>In other words, using medication only provides a &#8220;ceasefire.&#8221; The war does not end; the disease flares up again at the first sign of sweating, prolonged sitting, or trauma. As long as the hair nest (pilonidal cyst) is not mechanically removed, the disease stays there waiting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Healing Process and Common Misconceptions<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Patients sometimes feel relieved when an abscess bursts and think they have &#8220;healed.&#8221; In reality, this is just a decrease in pressure. The pilonidal sinus healing process only truly begins once the diseased tissue in that area is completely cleared.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In pilonidal sinus cases that are left untreated or ignored in hopes that they will &#8220;pass,&#8221; we unfortunately see the following progression:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"\" data-col=\"2\"><ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>The Tunnel Expands:<\/strong> A sinus that is initially 1-2 cm can advance under the skin like a molehill, spreading over wide areas of 10-15 cm.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Fistulization:<\/strong> The disease can deepen and progress toward the anal muscles or the bone membrane (periosteum).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>More Difficult Surgery:<\/strong> A disease that could be resolved in 10 minutes with a minor procedure (<strong>Microsinusectomy<\/strong>) in the early stages becomes a condition that requires extensive tissue flap surgeries when delayed.<\/li>\n<\/ul><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Do Not Waste Time, Do Not Delay<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>I understand the fear of surgery in my young patients very well. Old-fashioned methods that left wounds open and took months to heal have now been replaced by much more modern techniques.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you have discharge, pain, or a palpable swelling in the tailbone area, do not waste time with &#8220;herbal cures&#8221; or &#8220;miracle creams.&#8221; During this time, the disease only deepens.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Remember: Pilonidal sinus is not a &#8220;germ&#8221; disease; it is a &#8220;foreign body&#8221; disease. The solution is the removal of that object from the area.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Assoc.
