Hemorrhoids—commonly known as “piles”—are a condition caused by the dilation of veins in the anal region. Symptoms such as itching, bleeding, pain, burning, and swelling can significantly reduce quality of life. They are more common in individuals who sit for long periods, experience constipation, or frequently strain during bowel movements.

While hemorrhoid treatment used to rely mainly on surgery, today many patients can be successfully treated with non-surgical hemorrhoid treatment methods. These techniques shrink the enlarged hemorrhoidal vessels without the need for anesthesia, stitches, or hospitalization, allowing patients to return to daily life the same day.

What Is Non-Surgical Hemorrhoid Treatment?

Non-surgical hemorrhoid treatment involves shrinking enlarged hemorrhoidal vessels using heat, light, injections, or compression. The goal is to cut off the blood flow to the affected tissue, causing it to shrink. These procedures are usually short, painless, and often performed without anesthesia.

In early-stage hemorrhoids, non-surgical techniques can provide complete recovery. In more advanced stages, they may still be beneficial for patients who cannot undergo surgery, helping to reduce symptoms. One of the greatest advantages of non-surgical methods is that they preserve the natural anatomy of the anal region by avoiding surgical incisions. This results in faster recovery and minimal disruption to daily activities.

Why Are Non-Surgical Methods Preferred?

Non-surgical hemorrhoid treatments are widely preferred today because they offer comfort and rapid recovery. The key advantages include:

  • No surgical incision or stitches
  • Very low risk of pain and bleeding
  • No need for hospitalization; patients go home the same day
  • Quick return to normal activities
  • No anesthesia-related risks
  • Preservation of natural tissue

These methods are especially suitable for individuals with busy schedules or those who have fear of surgery.

Non-Surgical Hemorrhoid Treatment Methods

Non-surgical treatment options vary depending on the stage of hemorrhoids. The primary aim of each method is to stop blood flow to the hemorrhoid, causing it to shrink.

1. Rubber Band Ligation (Band Ligation)

In this method, a small rubber band is placed at the base of the hemorrhoidal tissue. The band cuts off the blood supply, causing the tissue to dry up and fall off within a few days. The procedure is painless and requires no anesthesia. Rubber band ligation is typically preferred for Grade 2 and Grade 3 internal hemorrhoids. It takes about 10–15 minutes, and patients can return home the same day and resume work the next day. It provides long-lasting results without surgical incisions. However, it is not suitable for external hemorrhoids or advanced-stage cases. Some patients may experience mild anal pain or spasms afterward.

2. Sclerotherapy (Injection Therapy)

Sclerotherapy involves injecting a special solution into or around the hemorrhoidal vessels to shrink them. The solution causes the vessel walls to adhere to each other, stopping blood flow. Over time, the vessel dries up, shrinks, and disappears. This method is effective for Grade 1 and Grade 2 internal hemorrhoids and shows excellent results after three sessions. It quickly relieves bleeding, itching, and mild swelling. It is also suitable for elderly patients or those with other medical conditions who cannot undergo surgery. No rest is required after the procedure; patients can return to normal activities the same day.

3. Laser Hemorrhoid Treatment

Laser treatment has become popular in recent years among both patients and physicians. However, laser hemorrhoid treatment is not considered a non-surgical method. The patient receives anesthesia, and the procedure is performed in the operating room.

A thin laser probe is inserted into the vessel, delivering controlled heat to shrink it. Because the energy may damage surrounding tissues, extreme caution is needed. We have treated patients who developed anal stenosis or sphincter insufficiency after laser hemorrhoid surgery. Poor healing caused by thermal injury can lead to severe narrowing of the anal canal. For this reason, we do not recommend the use of laser or other energy-based devices in the anal region.

4. Radiofrequency (RF) Method

Radiofrequency treatment uses high-frequency radio waves to deliver energy to the hemorrhoidal tissue. The heat causes controlled shrinkage of the vessel wall, reducing blood flow and decreasing the size of the hemorrhoid. Although the procedure is short and painless, it also involves an energy device, which is why we do not find it suitable for hemorrhoid treatment.

What Are the Costs of Non-Surgical Hemorrhoid Treatment?

Costs vary depending on the treatment method, the stage of the disease, the number of areas treated, and the clinic’s facilities.

Who Is Suitable for Non-Surgical Treatment?

Non-surgical hemorrhoid treatment is particularly ideal for early- and mid-stage hemorrhoids. Suitable candidates include:

  • Grade 2 and Grade 3 internal hemorrhoid patients
  • Individuals with bleeding, itching, or swelling
  • Patients without prolapsed external hemorrhoids
  • Patients who cannot undergo surgery (e.g., those with heart disease, hypertension, diabetes)
  • Individuals who want to avoid long postoperative recovery periods

However, non-surgical options are not sufficient in the following situations:

  • Grade 4 hemorrhoids
  • External hemorrhoids
  • Coexisting anal fissure
  • Rectal prolapse
  • Infection or thrombosed hemorrhoids

These patients may require surgical treatment.

How Is Non-Surgical Hemorrhoid Treatment Performed?

These procedures are usually performed in a clinical setting without anesthesia, or with local anesthesia or mild sedation. The procedure typically lasts 10–15 minutes. Patients can walk shortly afterward and go home the same day. During treatment, the hemorrhoidal vessel is targeted to stop its blood flow, causing it to shrink. No incisions or stitches are made. After the procedure, mild burning or pressure may occur, but symptoms usually resolve within a few hours. Warm sitz baths are recommended. Most patients return to their normal activities immediately.

What Is the Recovery Process Like After Non-Surgical Treatment?

Recovery is generally very comfortable. Pain is usually mild and manageable with simple painkillers. The risk of bleeding is minimal. After treatment, patients should:

  • Drink plenty of water and eat fiber-rich foods
  • Avoid constipation
  • Avoid prolonged sitting on the toilet
  • Refrain from lifting heavy objects
  • Take regular walks
  • Avoid sitting for long periods

Following these recommendations reduces the risk of recurrence and enhances long-term treatment success.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can hemorrhoids heal without surgery?

Yes. Early-stage hemorrhoids can be fully controlled with lifestyle changes and non-surgical treatment methods. Advanced-stage hemorrhoids typically require surgery.

Can external hemorrhoids heal without surgery?

Because external hemorrhoidal vessels lie beneath the skin, non-surgical treatments are usually insufficient.

How can I get rid of hemorrhoids without surgery?

Prevent constipation, consume fiber-rich foods, avoid prolonged sitting, and undergo an appropriate non-surgical treatment method recommended by your doctor. Early intervention increases success.

Non-surgical hemorrhoid treatment is one of the most comfortable ways to relieve hemorrhoid symptoms without surgery. When the right method is used for the right patient, results are permanent and painless. With proper lifestyle and dietary habits after treatment, long-term recovery is achievable. Remember, hemorrhoidal disease is not something to be embarrassed about. With early diagnosis and proper treatment, complete recovery is possible in a short time.
